How to compress images for the web

Oversized images are one of the easiest performance wins on a website. Before you chase complex CDN settings, shrink dimensions and file weight with a clear checklist.

1. Resize to the display size

A 4000px photo displayed at 800px wastes bandwidth. Use Resize Image to match the largest size you actually show.

2. Compress with a sensible quality target

For photos, start around 70–80% quality in Compress Image or Compress JPG. Compare before/after sizes and stop when artifacts appear.

3. Prefer modern formats when your audience allows it

Converting photos to WebP with JPG to WebP, or graphics with PNG to WebP, often beats classic JPG/PNG on weight.

4. Keep PNG when transparency matters

Logos and UI shots with alpha should stay PNG. Use Compress PNG so you do not accidentally flatten them to JPG.
